Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

WORK PERMITS Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a type of work permit that allows international students who have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution to work in Canada for up to three years after completing their studies.

To be eligible for a PGWP, the international student must have completed a full-time program of study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. The program must have been at least eight months in duration and led to a degree, diploma, or certificate.

The process to apply for a PGWP is as follows:

  1. Apply within 180 days of completing your program: You must apply for a PGWP within 180 days of completing your program of study.

  2. Gather required documents: You will need to provide various documents, including your passport, study permit, and a letter of completion from your school.

  3. Complete the application: You can apply online or by mail. The application will require you to provide information about your education, work history, and other personal information.

  4. Pay the application fee: There is a fee to apply for a PGWP, which must be paid when you submit your application.

  5. Wait for a decision: The processing time for a PGWP can vary, but it typically takes around four to five months. You can check the status of your application online.

Once your PGWP is approved, you can work in Canada for up to three years, depending on the length of your program of study. You can work for any employer in any industry, and you can change employers at any time. It’s important to note that a PGWP is not a permanent residency status, and you will need to apply for permanent residency through another immigration program if you wish to stay in Canada permanently.
