Close work permit or LMIA

What is the close work permit or LMIA

A closed work permit is a type of work permit that allows a foreign national to work for a specific employer in Canada, for a specified period of time. Unlike an open work permit, which allows a foreign national to work for any employer in Canada, a closed work permit is tied to a specific employer and job.

When a foreign national applies for a closed work permit, they will need to provide a job offer from a Canadian employer who has obtained a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), or who is exempt from the LMIA requirement.

A closed work permit is typically valid for the duration of the job offer, up to a maximum of two years. If the foreign national wishes to continue working in Canada after the expiration of the work permit, they will need to apply for a new work permit, either with the same employer or a different one.

It’s important to note that closed work permits may have certain restrictions, such as limitations on the type of work or location where the foreign national can work. Additionally, the employer may be required to provide certain benefits, such as health insurance, to the foreign national as part of the job offer.

The closed work permit process can be complex and may vary depending on the specific circumstances of the employer and foreign national. It’s recommended to seek the guidance of an experienced immigration professional to help you navigate the process.
